We're funding subsistence farmers in Uganda to plant trees - to prevent hill-country erosion and to fight climate disruption.
We've already helped 197 farmers plant 14,000 trees.
(see https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/reforestation-in-sw-uganda-phase-two )
But MUCH MORE is needed!
These farms border Bwindi National Park - home to Uganda's population of mountain gorillas.
I grew up in Uganda. Since around 2015 I have been liaising with Rubuguri villagers. We visited in 2018, and saw the results of stage 1 planting. Since then we've completed stage 2, but it's not enough.
Paying three local nurserymen to raise native and exotic seedlings; transporting seedlings to farmers; supervision by local mayor and local forestry expert. The more money we raise the more trees we can plant.
Final update for stage 3 - stage 4 now underway! 15 August 2022
Hi Everyone
Just a brief message to say thanks so much for your donations. The people of Rubuguri have repeatedly conveyed their appreciation, via our Uganda coordinator Moses.
With adverse weather events ramping up across the globe, it's now or never, as we struggle to leave our young folk with a liveable planet.
And every little helps.
Thank you very much!! I anticipate making the final payout to farmers within the next 2 weeks. I'm just waiting for photos from the final community group as evidence they are fulfilling their contractual obligations.
Hey, Malcolm - this is great, thanks so much. Contract signing and advance payment to farmer groups and nurserymen (2nd advance) this coming weekend!
Thanks again Juliet - I'll contact you privately as we may be able to use this for more trees (over the 9,000) if I can arrange that - or possibly to support Moses's family as he's done this entirely at his own initiative despite having a tough day job and a wife and 2 young kids. Each meeting he attends means a long day including a nasty 90 minute ride each way on very rough roads on a motorbike taxi...
Thank you for this, it's pretty much completed our budget. Wonderful! We now have 9,000 seedlings being raised and they'll be planted out over the next couple of months.
Claire - thank you!! that's another step towards our target. We hope the trees will go in the ground during the March-April wet season :)
