Restore Rotorua, addressing the impact of emergency housing on the Rotorua community, our people, our businesses and our visitors.
Rotorua, Bay Of Plenty
Restore Rotorua is a group of Rotorua locals who care deeply about our community, our people, our businesses + our visitors. We are concerned with the Rotorua Lakes Council failure to inform and consult with the local community regarding changes to the tourism accommodation based in the heart of Rotorua. Granting what we believe is non-complying resource consent to Kainga Ora in respect of "transitional housing" for the homeless. Along with six other final resource consent applications currently before the Council from the Ministry of Housing and Development for "emergency housing".
Restore Rotorua members are concerned that the Council has failed the local community, with the negative impact emergency housing has on the environment, its people, its businesses, local tourism and the city of Rotorua.
Restore Rotorua has called on the services of Mai Chen - LLB(Hons) (Otago) LLM (Harvard) FNZIM, of Chen Palmer. This has led to the Council agreeing to conduct an Independent Commissioner Hearing Panel, which is likely to commence in February 2022.
The Restore Rotorua team are passionate about this cause, ensuring that there is a WIN-WIN for both the community and the homeless - ensuring that Rotorua remains a top tourist destination as well as housing/caring for our homeless.
As you can imagine Mai Chen and her team are working hard preparing for the Hearing and legal costs are starting to mount. We would appreciate your support and your donation to help us continue to be a collective voice and cover the legal costs leading to the hearing early next year.
Up til now, all legal fees have been covered privately by members of Restore Rotorua, we sincerely hope that you can help lessen the load.
Thank you.
All money raised will be used towards the legal cost leading to the hearing.
New Year! New Goal! 2 January 2022
Your help is needed now!
The Restore Rotorua team are passionate about our city! We want to ensure that there is a WIN-WIN for both the community and the homeless. Our aim is that Rotorua remains a top tourist destination as well as housing/caring for OUR homeless.
We have managed to halt Resource Consents being pushed through by the Rotorua Lakes Council on Motels being used as Emergency / Transitional Housing on Fenton Street - with an independent hearing scheduled for early this year.
Of the 37 Motels on Fenton Street, 24 are Emergency Housing and three are MIQ or MIQ Army Accommodation. Leaving only 9 motels for visitors to Rotorua. 1 is closed for renovations.
We are genuinely concerned about the impact of mass Emergency Housing/Transitional Housing in motels in Rotorua and the effect that is having and will continue to have in the future - on our community, our people, tourism, businesses + our visitors.
Please make a donation to help. Follow our Facebook page. Share with family and friends.
Together our collective voice will be heard.
The Restore Rotorua Team.
