Young people participating in the Auckland Marathon 2023 to raise funds for the Rise+Shine Josiah Mika Foundation supporting young people.

We are a group of mainly rangatahi (young people), and a few pakeke (adults), keen to try something totally outside of our comfort zone - and raise funds for an important cause 'Rise+Shine Josiah Mika Foundation' while we do it! The foundation, in memory of Josiah, supports young people to rise above adversity, illuminate resilience, to flourish & shine.

We are encouraging Māori and Pacific young people to participate in the Auckland Marathon, with the support of a like-minded collective - all new to long distance running. Our rangatahi leads, Jerome & Osita, will be providing training support for everyone, based on their own personal journeys of developing new skills and techniques to master long-distance running training and encourage holistic positive wellbeing.

About us

In loving memory of their precious son Josiah (Sunrise 20/09/2010 - Sunset 16/05/2020), The Wharewera-Mika whānau established the Rise+Shine Josiah Mika Foundation, empowering young people to RISE above adversity, exuberant resilience, flourish and SHINE.

Use of funds

The funds raised will be used to support initiatives and programs for young people in the South Auckland and Eastern BOP to flourish and shine.

We’re so proud of our Rise & Shine team who have collectively raised over $7,800+ for the Josiah Mika Foundation❤️

In total, our crew consisted of 26 courageous whānau & friends (most of whom have never entered a long distance running event in their lives!) in support of the Foundation and the mahi we do for tamariki and rangatahi.
