’m John Pilbrow, 43, in Kaihu, Northland, for my final housesit here.
Since mid-2023, I’ve house-sat, leaving Tauranga to explore Northland. For 12 years, I ran JP Gardening Plus, crafting timber planters, funding them from passion.
Without local mentors, I learned through trial and error, chasing YouTube “opportunities”—many scams. Long drives between sits and homeowners piling on tasks, exploiting my kind nature, have overwhelmed me, leaving no space for my own projects or rest. Selling all to house-sit built a portfolio of happy pet owners, but I’m stretched thin.
In Kaihu, I’m tying up loose ends, facing a financial crisis, and asking for help—hard for an independent soul.
I’m now prioritizing financial education to gain stability and set boundaries, not juggle more. I still craft planters for donors and care for pets, but learning is my focus. With one day left to donate, your support can help me study finance and reclaim my space. Thank you for helping me move beyond overwhelm to a life of clarity!
Use of funds
The money will fund car repairs ($3,862.34), debt relief ($6,000), and growth for a paid house-sitting business. If the target isn’t met, it’ll cover essentials like food, fuel, phone/data, and urgent debt payments to keep the house-sitting gig going.

Ive just got back to Kaihu this afternoon. My first mission is list stuff i already have here to be able to move forward lightly and not lug stuff around and get stuck on the same property unless it aligns right. There are bigger and more The right location will pop up soon enough. Kaihu has been amazing but ive done my time here and need to be smarter with how i travel. Traveling back here today was 125 ks and to travel to Wellsford will be the same. This will be my final house sit in Kaihu. Ive developed some good skills here and you guys will benefit from that. The community here is small and poor. Not good for abundant minded John. John need to fly! Dont like being isolated and feeling trapped. Come visit and enjoy what i got to when i first arrived.
I have had thoughts about a business grant through winz but as i said im seeing a financial mentor first to discuss some other options first.
