Help Annie get a roho cushion to enjoy village life again
Canterbury
Annie (pseudonym) is a bright, friendly and social Papua New Guinean woman in her 20s. She was paralysed secondary to spinal TB in her teens. YWAM has been visiting her in her village for many years, and last year was able to deliver a wheelchair that was donated for Annie that has wheels that are very suited for life in a village in remote PNG (think lots of mud, no concrete, houses made of bush materials). Annie had been enjoying being able to spend long days out and about in the community, visiting friends, playing games, sitting by the water, watching rugby matches and being social since receiving her wheelchair. This really changes her whole day to day life. Unfortunately she has developed a deep pressure sore which means she has been housebound for more than a month as it is too painful to sit. When her family is out she is stuck lying on the floor in her house until someone comes home, unable to participate actively in her community. Having a roho cushion would provide her with long term pressure relieving care, and enable her to get back out and about in her wheelchair despite her pressure sore.
Met her through my voluntary work as a nurse in PNG, some of my colleagues have known her for several years, and she lives in a village my team will continue to visit multiple times per year.
Purchasing a roho cushion for Annie's wheelchair
Cushion delivered (well nearly!) 10 August 2022
Hi everyone
Thank you again so much for your generosity. I just wanted to let you know that yesterday I was able to give the Roho cushion to Annie’s aunty. Unfortunately at this time I’m not able to make it all the way to Annie’s village myself to deliver it to her like I would have hoped. However I took the opportunity to connect with her aunty in the town I’m currently staying in. I was able to show her how the cushion works and how to take care of it. Annie’s mum is planning to come from her village and collect it this week.
I spoke with Annie on the phone at the weekend and again today. She is excited to get the cushion, she still hasn’t been out in her wheelchair due to her pressure sore. This will make such a big difference to her daily life - giving her the ability to be out and about and interacting with the wider community again.
Thank you all again so much for your generosity and for showing Annie that despite her circumstances and the remoteness of where she lives that she matters and has value.
Love Gemm
