Run To The Kermadecs! BLAKE Expedition 2021

$895 of $2,100 goal
Given by 23 generous donors in 11 weeks

My name is Ethan McCormick, I am raising awareness and funds for my BLAKE Expedition to the Kermadec Islands in March 2021.

Auckland

I have been selected to join a group of young New Zealanders aboard HMNZS Canterbury on a BLAKE Expedition to the Kermadec Islands in March 2021. However, before I get there, our task is to raise awareness and funds for Blake NZ!

Blake NZ (formerly The Sir Peter Blake Trust) is an organisation dedicated to carrying out the late Sir Peter Blake's vision of a thriving and sustainable environment. Earlier this year I was fortunate enough to attend the week long BLAKE Inspire programme in the Waikato alongside sixty other secondary school students.

Every two years BLAKE NZ runs BLAKE Expeditions (a trip to either the Sub-Antarctic or Kermadec Islands). From the one-hundred-and-twenty Blake Inspire candidates, twenty are selected.

This voyage not only allows me to be involved with scientific fieldwork in a pristine marine environment alongside the New Zealand Navy, scientists, and Blake NZ, but it allows me to spread awareness of this unique corner of the world.

From 7 December 2020 to 28 February 2021 I will be running the distance from New Zealand to the Kermadecs (730km) to raise awareness for BLAKE NZ, the Kermadec Islands, and the issues facing New Zealand's natural environment. Over the next twelve weeks I will be providing updates of my progress alongside other interesting snippets of information.

Please consider making a donation for BLAKE NZ and my expedition, but most importantly take the time to stay posted with my updates! Thank you and I hope to have some intriguing stories to tell after March!

Expedition Cancellation  6 March 2021

On Thursday night our expedition to the Kermadec Islands was cancelled. The latest lockdown significantly impacted on the Navy's schedule and has not left an opportunity for the expedition crew to join HMNZS Canterbury.

It is difficult to speculate on how yesterday's earthquakes would have impacted the voyage, but at that time the Canterbury would have been anchored just off Raoul Island.

It is gutting to miss out on this voyage, however, the BLAKE NZ team are currently investigating options for a programme later this year.

The late Sir Peter Blake had a vision for a thriving and sustained natural environment. However, most importantly, he believed in inspiring others. Being part of the BLAKE Expedition crew was not only about exploring one of the world's most pristine environments, but it was also about spreading the word - for the Kermadecs, BLAKE NZ, and the need to take action. I hope that you have been able to learn something new and take an interest in these things.

Please send me an email with a bank account number and I will be in touch about refunding your donation. My email address is: ethan.mcc45@gmail.com
