The Begonia house is more than a renovation - it's a renewal of Wellington's spirit. Come join the party.
Wellington
We haven't finished!
To transform the Begonia House from a ‘do minimum’ renovation into a cherished Wellington landmark the Friends need to raise $1m for the agreed enhancements and we need your help to do this.
Our mission is to fund the enhancements through community generosity, and contribute towards a much loved landmark that will flourish for future generations.”
We’re inviting you to be part of The 800. Top up your donation to $1000 and leave your own legacy on behalf of your family, your grandchildren or your much loved cat or dog — or go crazy and donate twice!
Donor names will be etched on a beautiful glass panel in the conservatory foyer.
Prefer to remain anonymous? Just follow the prompts. All donations over $5.00 are eligible for a tax rebate certificate.
This is more than a renovation. It’s a renewal of Wellington’s spirit. Help us build beyond the minimum — and leave your mark on a place that means so much to so many.
The Friends support the conservation of the garden, offer a friendly guiding service to visitors and help out in a whole range of other ways such as tending a special section of the garden.
All donations will be used to reverse the WCC decision to demolish the Begonia House. This will require media and social media exposure, advertising, signage, petitions, demonstrations and possibly defending our position in the court of law.
Updated Use of Funds 15 September 2025

The Friends of the Botanic Gardens are seeking to raise $1 million to fund upgraded fittings, improved landscaping, and final touches that will ensure Begonia House remains a source of civic pride for the next 60 years.
