Shakti's Wellington Refuge is under threat of closing due to underfunding. This is a vital service that our community cannot stand to lose.
Wellington
The Shakti Wellington Refuge has been categorically denied government funding. Shakti has been at the forefront of striving for equality and equity for migrant and refugee women in New Zealand, and our Wellington refuge opened in 2014 after the murders of two migrant women in Wellington due to domestic violence - Sarwan Lata Singh and Mei Fan. We knew then, as much as we know now, that those women should have had access to refuge services that understood their cultural contexts. They had a right to access life-saving culturally appropriate support services.
Migration and displacement from one's home country and community creates an increased risk for vulnerable women who too commonly experience social isolation and severe barriers to accessing safety and justice in a foreign and unfamiliar environment. Traumatised by abuse and domestic violence, the understanding of culturally competent service providers is critical in saving the lives of vulnerable women in our community.
Between April 2016 and March 2017, Shakti Wellington serviced 352 clients, around 200 of whom accessed our services through referrals by the police. With a growing migrant/refugee community in Wellington, we forecast a further increase in demand of our services, and it is imperative that Shakti continues to stay in operation within Wellington.

Shakti Community Council is a culturally specialist organisation that endeavors to end family violence in migrant and refugee communities.
Funds raised will go towards assisting with the housing, food, health and legal costs of the women seeking shelter in our refuge. Typically victim-survivors arrive with nothing but the clothes on their back and their passports, requiring help purchasing the most basic essentials. Funds raised will also go towards the operational costs of our refuge (rent, power, water).
