Shane has had a mountain bike crash and broken his neck. He has an uncertain and long road to recovery ahead.
Wellington
Many of you will know that Shane has been an avid mountain biker (and previously an avid motor cross rider) for some time. He has had his fair share of spills over the years, but nothing that hasn’t put him out of action for too long.
On Saturday (23 April) his wife Nicki received a call that no one would want to hear. While mountain biking in Rotorua, Shane had suffered a serious crash. He fractured and dislocated his C6/7 vertebrae in his neck and sustained full paralysis to his body. He was airlifted to Auckland Hospital and underwent emergency surgery through the early hours of the morning to graft bone from his hip and fuse his vertebrae together.
At this early stage, things are very uncertain for Shane, Nicki, and his three children Josh (11), Keira (7), and Rylee (3). There has been some promising signs, with some sensation and limited movement returning – but there will be a long recovery ahead for him in Auckland.
While he has some friends and family in Auckland, his primary support network is in Wellington, and in the months ahead one of the most difficult things for Shane will be only seeing Nicki and his children intermittently.
Please help Shane and his family get through this terrible time. Any donations would be greatly appreciated to help fund flights for his family to visit him and cover any other travel related costs.
Shane is a lifelong friend and best mate.
Shane's is Making Huge Strides in his Recovery 29 April 2016
Wow! Thank you every one for your generosity, Shane and Nicki have been overwhelmed by the response to his injury, and wish to convey their thanks to every person who has contributed. The money raised means that Shane will be able to have Nicki and his children visit him often while he continues to recover.
Today Nicki was able to take Josh, Keira, and Rylee to see Shane for the first time since the crash. This has been a big day, as they have been worried and missing their dad immensely – but they were all so happy to see how far he has come since the crash.
Shane has been determined to reach new milestones every day and the doctors have been marvelling at Shane’s recovery so far. He has gone from nearly complete paralysis and loss of sensation to having feeling slowly return to his body – and he has regained some strength and movement. He has been in the gym over the last few days, has been walking short distances with the aid of a frame and is able to remain standing in an upright position unaided. His left hand has been stubborn though, and he remains unable to use it.
He is seeing an improvement every day and we are all optimistic that his recovery is on track!
