Closed for 8 months due to vandalism, walkathon volunteers at Manurewa Methodist Church are raising money for essential reopening repairs.
Auckland
Staff and volunteers at Manurewa’s “Corner of Hope” Manurewa Methodist Parish are looking for sponsors or dononations for a 5km walk at Bruce Pullman Park on May 1 - so they can help reopen the church. The community facility has been closed for more than eight months since vandalism and arson caused damage that insurance couldn’t cover.
Now a fundraising committee, led by minister Rev. Vai Ngahe, is walking 5km to raise funds needed to reopen the church. The funds raised will support the unexpected Council consenting and compliance costs from the repairs to the Church and Community Outreach facilities. Reverend Vaituulala has partnered with local and local government agencies over the past seven years to run a community meal drop in on Tuesdays - and works with local iwi and Pacifica groups and the local business association too. Now the church is closed the hospitality drop in happens at the Manurewa Anglican hall, where all services and community groups are meeting now. Rev. Vaituulala, who’s led the church for more than 10 years now, wants to see the funds raised so necessary work can be done to repair damage as a result of the arson that occurred some months ago. Staff and volunteers at Manurewa Methodist Parish, and now their Anglican partners, continue to stage the weekly meal for the community at the temporary venue at the Anglican. They’d like to reopen their central church.
The idea for the walkathon came from the church’s fundraising committee, and the idea for the seven year old community meal came from the Great South Rd church's Reverend Vaitu'ulala Ngahe and Manurewa's Labour MP Louisa Wall. To sponsor Reverend Vai and his team, or support the cause in some way, get in touch.
My parents church for the past 40 years has been Manurewa Methodist, where they’ve welcomed and served ministers, the community and the church in various roles - including working with Rev. Vaiitu’ulala Ngahe.I’m supporting by spreading the word
All funds raised by sponsorship or donations for the 5km walkathon at Bruce Pullman Park on 1 May will be put toward the unexpected consenting and compliance costs, and the repairs necessary to reopen this community centre.

The final payment of donated funds will be released back to me to pass on to the Rev Vaiitu’ulala and the church fundraising committee.
