Help support Albie Hopkinson and his family through his upcoming heart surgery
Wellington
Kia ora e te whānau,
Our dear Albie Hopkinson is about to have major heart surgery at Starship Hospital in Auckland, with his wonderful family Sarah, Marcus & Fred by his side.
It’s been a rough journey, but Sarah & Marcus have been overwhelmed with love and support from friends and family leading up to this.
The surgery itself and recovery are both massive things to go through and they also come with some added financial pressures. This page has been set up as a way for people to contribute to some concrete and practical things to help Albie and his family through this time.
Here are the things the funds will go towards:
- Flights for Fred
- Coffee, snacks and meals
- Accommodation/flights for support people coming from outside Auckland
- Any treatments for Albie after discharge like physio, counselling
- Covering any loss of earnings
- Treats for the boys
- Pocket money for Fred's babysitters so he can go to zoo etc.
I know Sarah & Marcus will be so incredibly grateful for any and all support during this time.
Albie is an extraordinary human with a very special heart. We are all sending him huge love and strength for this journey ahead.

Thankyou! 13 July 2021
One month ago today Albie was having open heart surgery. Seven hours, a new pulmonary valve, a new pulmonary artery. A truly agonising time, that we are still recovering from in all sorts of ways.
Thankyou to you all so much for all the incredible love and support that has been wrapped around us all.
Words really underserve the feelings we have, but I thought I'd write a wee update on how useful and appreciated your support has been.
Firstly it was really wonderful that I could have over a month off work and not feel financial pressure. It was also brilliant to be able to support our supporters, covering flights and accommodation where it was needed.
Albie is doing remarkably well now physically and we remain optimistic that the surgery has sorted out his electrical issues which were causing his chest pains (we won't really know till he starts running about, but fingers are firmly crossed ). With the support we've received we got Albie an e-scooter to help him whilst he recovers some level of fitness.
Emotionally and mentally, there is certainly work to do and we are utilising art therapy to help him process his big feelings about feeling broken. Again this is happening easily because of your support.
A special thanks has to go to Inga who put this all together. Again, words fail me.
Thankyou to you all for being alongside us on this beautiful, crazy life, guiding and holding us when times got tough. We are so, so, so lucky - and we sure do hope we get to see you one day soon, and thankyou properly in person.
Peace, light and love,
