Support for Laura's legal defence

Wellington

On Thursday 10 February 2022, Laura Cassin was arrested along with dozens of other concerned New Zealanders while protesting at Parliament against the government’s vaccine mandates and in support of the right to bodily autonomy.

Laura was dragged out of the protest line by two police women and forced to the ground where a male police officer kneeled on her head while she was handcuffed.

Thousands of New Zealanders witnessed her individual statement that day – symbolically represented by her near naked, vulnerable body, against the State.

But unlike the dozens of others who were arrested that day and have since had their charges dropped, the Police refuse to drop charges of wilful trespass against her. Laura was refused legal aid for her preferred lawyer by the government who instead demanded she take the public defender on offer.

Barrister Tudor Clee has agreed to take on her case.

Help Laura get the legal representation she needs. Laura cannot afford the legal fee which is why we’ve set up this page: Laura’s access to justice fund. She will be enormously grateful for any contributions.

Laura and I met after the protest at Parliament. She is an smart, driven young woman with a great future ahead of her. We believe it would be unjust for her to have a conviction staining her future career prospects when others had their charges dropped.

Use of funds

Legal fees. With current legal bills and barrister costs, a minimum of 7,500 is needed. If this amount is not reached, all funds received will go towards legal costs. But we will get there!

Victorious thanks to you!  15 August 2023

I want to express my most heartfelt gratitude to all who supported my fundraiser. Thanks to your generosity, I was able to pay the retainer for lawer Tudor Clee and win in court! At mytrial, the judge struck out the case due to police prosecutor misconduct.

The remainder of my legal fees to cover the cost of trial was hanging over me. Fortunately, Tudor held a trial for compensation of legal costs, and again, we won! Here is a 1news article which explains how he did it:

Thanks to you all, we are on the highway to victory and justice.

More updates to follow as we continue holding our public servants accountable.

With all my love,

Thank you

Laura
