Raising funds to support a family through a challenging time.

Twizel, Canterbury

On Saturday the 13th, 12-year-old Leithen Beattie was involved in a serious motorbike accident not far from Twizel. As a result of the injuries he sustained, the top half of Leithen’s right foot had to be removed.Leithen has facial and bodily bruises and cuts. He has had three surgeries already with more to come. This has changed his world in an instant and means many months ahead in and out of hospital as he begins to heal and learn what his new normal will look like.

Leithen’s mum, Tammy, will be by his side throughout this long journey and will be unable to work during this time. Any financial support, no matter how small, would be deeply appreciated to help ease the pressure and allow Tammy to focus fully on Leithen’s recovery. Any financial contributions will go towards Leithen’s rehabilitation, travel to be able to access the best care and any financial burdens that may come their way including but not limited to power / rent / food / accommodation.

As a family, we are simply counting our lucky stars that our boy is still here with us.

We would like to thank Twizel Volunteer Fire Brigade, St John and Dunedin Helicopter Crew for all their help and kindness they shown during this traumatic event.

Thank you for your kindness, support, and generosity during this incredibly challenging time.

Leithen Injury Update   12 January 2026

Following his accident, Leithen has now undergone three surgeries, with his fourth scheduled for this Thursday. He has also had six dressing changes so far, all of which have gone really well and shown positive progress.

A huge thank you to the district nurses for their incredible care, support, and dedication—not only for everything they have done already, but also for all the ongoing work ahead as Leithen continues his recovery. Their help has been invaluable.

This Thursday’s surgery will involve a skin graft, which is needed to close the wound on his foot. We’re hopeful this will be a big step forward and an important step in his healing journey.

Leithen is adapting really well and has been loving visits from his friends. He even made it to the basketball court to attempt a few shots, which lifted his spirits. While he is still unable to weight bear at this stage, he has adapted extremely well to using crutches and is getting around amazingly.

Most importantly, Leithen is in really good spirits, and we’re looking forward to the day he can fully get back to life in Twizel. Thank you again to everyone for the continued support and kindness—it truly means so much.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
