Please support the Hitchcock Family as Kate (mum) and Toby (12) go through life-saving surgeries for chronic lung disease.
Auckland
For many years, Kate and Chris Hitchcock and their four children have been dealing with significant challenges brought about by lung disease.
Mum, Kate, has a chronic respiratory illness called bronchiectasis, which requires her to undergo a lung transplant within in the next year. This condition also affects 3 of their 4 children, but it is Toby (12) who is currently most critical.
Toby has abnormal growths in his airways that have severely restricted his breathing. This year he's had multiple medical procedures and long stays at Starship, preventing him from attending school or doing anything a regular 12 year old boy should be doing.
Despite extensive efforts, Toby’s lung condition has worsened in recent months, leading to severe weight loss and lung bleeds. His situation has been life-threatening and on 11 November 2024 he had ~9 hour surgery to remove part of his lung.
Despite her own degenerating lung health, Kate cares tirelessly for Toby, Ollie (9), Amelia (15) and Harry (19). In addition to working, Chris has also been supporting the family at home and hospital. They are now facing an extremely challenging uphill battle with Toby’s recovery and Kate’s imminent lung transplant.

The next stage at home! 7 December 2024
Toby is now home, which, we dreamed would be the start of us putting this year behind us, and looking forward to happier times.
The reality is, it’s not quite like that. It’s raw, and it’s tough, and Toby has quite a journey ahead of him.
Toby developed an air leak and pneumothorax recently, which was unexpected given the time since surgery, so that extended our stay, and once home, he developed an infection which saw us straight back in to starship.
The physical recovery is one thing, but something that has blindsided us, is the mental health toll that the past few months, and indeed, the many years prior have taken on Toby.
Toby has PTSD. The scary events, and living in a life threatening state, on a knife edge at all times, is just too much. Toby swings between desperately wanting to be in starship, where he feels safe, and yet, not wanting to step foot inside, because the memories there are overwhelming. We feel helpless.
We are in the trenches right now, life is anything but normal, each day focuses on how to best support Toby, and finding all our strength to continue, hour by hour, as he tries to make sense of the rough blow he’s been given.
We are forever grateful to everyone that has helped us, in so many ways. Asking for help is hard, but we know we can’t do this on our own, so a very heartfelt thank you.
