Supporting whanau during stay in Wellington
Hastings, Hawke's Bay
Kia Ora my name is Alaina, I am mum to Skyla, Joey, Esme & Mikaere-Ray. Mikaere-Ray born via c-section at Hastings hospital January 9 at 7.7 pounds and was diagnosed with Pyloric Artesia (type of blockage/obstruction of the pylorus a narrow opening between the end of the stomach & start of the small intestines). This type of condition causes swallowed fluid that cannot be digested properly causing vomit to release pressure in the stomach.
January 10 Mikaere is escorted & flown to Wellington Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), followed by myself on a different flight that evening. January 11 surgery performed to correct the obstruction and create a normal passage from the stomach through to the duodenum which was an incision just above the belly button. Mikaere is now in a stable recovery after a successful operation. Myself & the other children are now relocated to Wellington until Mikaere is discharged of around several weeks.
Urgent costs of flights back to Hawkes Bay for three children, car hire once a week while in Wellington and future medical costs/equipment (which will include private healthcare checks, special food and a new specialized pram for Mikaere)
Funds will also go towards general assistance including day to day expenses and also a chromebook for my other daughter who will now need to study remotely
Mikaere update 7/5 7 May 2025
Hi whanau,
I’m not sure if I mentioned but I closed the page at $966 as we had private donations that exceeded our goal and still continue to receive donations these are with his own bank account & can only be enquired or withdrawn from the bank with good reason (medical needs for Mikaere & whanau).
We also have amazing support from Te Whatu Ora, and social work organisations through ICU & NICU.
Friday 2nd May Mikaere had a appointment with his paediatrician Deb, dietician Ally and surgical GP all was good except slight weight drop but steady growth, the dietician requested I try formula which I did Monday 5th unfortunately after a tablespoon he broke out badly around the mouth within minutes we were rushed to the doctors & monitored. Likely allergies to dairy or lactose intolerance another update in 3-4 weeks with dietician Paula working beside us with baby she also gave us a fat substitute for baby to gain some weight which he is taking well. Overall baby is ok & has also started kohanga with papa 2hrs a week weaning in & he absolutely loves it.
He is getting stronger able to hold his head very well, likes to kick and punch around. We are now learning to roll.
I have added a photo of his reaction post formula.
Talk soon whanau,
Lainz
