Raising funds to support Roy through cranial surgery while mum Alannah recovers from heart attack

Christchurch, Canterbury

Roy was born on 9 September 2024 and unexpectedly diagnosed with a cranial condition called sagittal craniosynostosis when he was only 8 weeks old. Craniosynostosis is generally completely random and affects 1/2000-3000 births.

While Roy grew in Alannah’s belly his skull (his sagittal suture specifically) fused which caused him to develop a long narrow head. Babies skull plates normally have flexible un-fused joints to allow the brain and skull to grown rapidly in the early years. However, Roy’s skull had to compensate for where it was fused and grew incorrectly. Before xmas he had his first surgery to help correct this and their brave wee man coped remarkably well. He now has to go to Wellington for a second major surgery on 20 March to re-shape his skull.

Unfortunately, to add to this, last week 11 March Alannah suffered a heart attack from an event called SCAD (spontaneous coronary artery dissection) where a tear in her artery wall resulted in blood flow being blocked to her heart, causing in heart damage. It has been determined that stress caused this.

As you can imagine, it has been a nightmare for this young family. They never like to ask for help but are always helping others, so now it’s time for us to rally together. Finances are the last thing they need to be worried about right now, any and all contributions will be so appreciated.

Update from Alannah and family:

We are so grateful for everyone’s support and love over the last week, it’s been a bloody ride! On surgery day Roy’s surgeons assessed him and decided it would now be too risky to do more than removing the springs that were opening his skull up. The amount of bone that has grown since Decembers surgery wouldn’t tolerate the fracturing and the blood loss from that would be unsafe for his wee body.

We’re very very relieved and thankful his surgery went smoothly, and for the amazing care he received in Wellington Hospital. The nurses on the ward have also been amazing making sure Alannah has been taken care of too ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

From here they’re going to let nature do its thing for 1-2yrs. This limbo is a bit daunting, but his safety and wellbeing is priority on this medical journey. For now, we can let him (and Alannah) recover! Roy Boy is back home now in Christchurch.

From Alannah about the donations:

I really really can’t think of the words to describe the impact this has and how overwhelmingly grateful we are for everyone’s support. It is such a huge relief. This will cover the costs of this trip, and gives me breathing room for when we return when he’s about 18m. It will also allow me to work on myself and get supportive treatments and therapies so I can hopefully lower my risk of anything cardiac happening again.
