Supporting Brenden's road to recovery after a serious accident

Gisborne

On Saturday 11th December 2021, Brenden climbed into his race car and headed out onto the speedway track; something he had done most Saturday nights for the past 23 years.

Unfortunately this time round Brenden would not climb back out of his car. After making severe impact with the concrete wall, Brenden straight away knew something was not right. The emergency St Johns & Fire Rescue crews at Napier Speedway cut Brenden out of the car before flying him to Middlemore Hospital in Auckland with spinal injuries.

Brenden underwent a 4 hour surgery on his spine to repair the damage caused by the accident. At this stage, Brenden is currently paralysed from the waist down.

A well respected competitor throughout the country, Brenden is a NZ Champion and one of the most successful Streetstock drivers of all time. Off the track Brenden is a full time mechanic, a staunch Warriors supporter & a family man. Together with his partner Kaza and their young family Brodie (10) & Kaylee (3), they enjoy spending time at the beach, playing sport where Brenden coaches Brodie’s rugby team and racing go-karts & speedway.

Brenden has a very long recovery ahead of him but with his determination and the love & support he has around him, we have no doubt that one day he will make a full recovery.

Brenden is currently recovering in Middlemore Hospital. In 2 weeks he will be transferred to a spinal rehab facility in Auckland, where he will be based for several months of rehab before hopefully being transferred back to his home in Gisborne.

This page has been created to help Brenden & his family in any way needed to allow them to care and support him in the difficult & unknown times ahead.

Home Bound!  4 April 2022

Thank you to everyone that has donated through this Givealittle page, it truly is amazing the amount of support Brenden has received! He appreciates every one of you 💚🖤

Brenden enters his final week at Burwood Spinal Unit in Christchurch. He will be heading home to Gisborne this Thursday 🙌🏼

It has now been 4 months since Brenden’s accident at Meeanee Speedway. It’s been a long road to where he is today. Initially given very little hope of walking again, Brenden has proved anything is possible through his sheer determination to not give up.

The video on the Gooch Motorsport Facebook page, shows how far he has come. With the help of his physio’s, Brenden has exceeded expectations and continues to improve everyday.

A few people Brenden would like to thank:

A huge thanks to the Burwood physio team & nurses; you guys are amazing! I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today without you all. Also to everyone I’ve met in the spinal unit, you’ve all made this journey so much easier. I am happy to have made some new friends for life here at Burwood.

A special thanks to James & Cush for being there every step of the way; opening up your house for me & my family and for taking me out on the weekends. You guys rock!

Thanks also to my family for all of your support and the many trips down to Christchurch. Last but not least, thank you to my partner Kaz for looking after our beautiful kids. You have been my rock throughout this!

Brenden looks forward to being back at home with his family and friends. He will be continuing his physio in Gisborne with his next goal to get on crouches before properly walking again.

As said by Brenden “This race is not over” 💚🖤
