Help me raise $10,000 to treat debilitating childbirth injuries, provide obstetric care & train midwives in Ethiopia.

International

Where we live should not determine whether we endure great suffering. So, in 2016, with the help of my beautiful family, friends and community I am raising $10,000 for the Hamlin Charitable Fistula Hospitals and Hamlin College of Midwives in Ethiopia. This is an internationally-renowned organsation dedicated to the treatment and prevention of obstetric fistula, a devastating childbirth injury, and to the training of midwives in one of the poorest countries in the world. Without access to midwives and proper obstetric care many young Ethiopian women have obstructed labours, which result in agonising multi-day labours, stillborn babies and obstetric fistulas. Young ladies with fistulas become permanently incontinent and subsequently experience the worst forms of disadvantage and discrimination.

Pushed to the edge of society, these women are among the most marginalised in the world. At the Hamlin Fistula Hospitals, women receive free surgery, counselling, physiotherapy and loving care.

Founded by Drs Catherine and Reg Hamlin in 1974, the organisation is now a healthcare network of 550 staff servicing six hospitals, a rehabilitation centre, and the Hamlin College of Midwives.

Over 45,000 women have received free treatment and the network operates purely on philanthropic donations.

My heart goes out to the thousands of precious women in Ethiopia whose lives have been devastated by debilitating childbirth injuries. My own childhood was marred by domestic violence and I became a teen Mum at 16, so I've been exposed to suffering, isolation and shame and know how terrible this can feel. Fortunately, my life improved significantly and I've had incredible opportunities to pursue education and employment, build beautiful friendships, engage in my community and raise a wonderful family. Now I want to empower other women, help restore their dignity and give them hope. I have committed to raising at least $10,000 for Ethiopian women to access free restorative surgery and to train midwives to prevent further suffering. Please join me in being a hope-bringer, love-giver and community-restorer! xx

WOOHOO!! Together with my amazing and generous friends, family & community we have raised over $10,000 for the Hamlin Fistula organisation to prevent and treat childbirth injuries in Ethiopia!! (The above total doesn't reflect this because most of the money was raised through other means!!) This has been an incredible journey & I thank everyone who has shown their support in some way - especially those who donated, helped put on a charity auction, baked cupcakes, helped with our movie fundraiser, spread the word or provided encouragement along the way. You are all fabulous & have helped to make a difference to the lives of precious women and communities in Ethiopia. THANK YOU xx
