I am riding the 160km Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge in support of De Paul House who provide Emergency Housing and Family Support in Auckland.

Auckland

As part of a fundraising exercise by The Warehouse, I am riding the 160km Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge in support of De Paul House.

De Paul House responds to the needs of homeless families. It's service aims to keep families united in a safe and dignified environment, help them address the issues that have led to them being homeless, and have them leave to successfully re-establish themselves in the community. De Paul House accepts families of all nationalities and religions.

As a keen amateur cyclist, this is a great opportunity for me to unite two of my passions - cycling and charity work! And what better organisation to support than De Paul House.

Oh - and I've never ridden 160km in a race before, so plenty of challenge for me too!

Meeting the 'League of Nations'  19 November 2015

Meet ‘The League of Nations’ that is De Paul House – these kids are all NZ residents and citizens and come from a range of origins – pictured here are ‘NZers’, Maori, Pacific Islanders including Tongan and Samoan, Afghani, Filipino, and Taiwanese. This reflects De Paul House policy of accepting families of ALL nationalities and religions.

Lesley showed me a family unit that a new family is moving into next week. She explained to me how they make a point of making the beds, leaving toys on them for the kids. A nice way to be welcomed in a new environment!

When asked what trend she's noticed in managing homeless families in recent years, she said that sadly it has become much more common to see ‘working families’ that can no longer sustain themselves and need assistance.

De Paul House is all about giving these homeless families structure and education from learning English to planning, budgeting, so that they eventually leave with the confidence and knowledge to make it independently, pride restored.

Help me to help De Paul House – the work that this group of people – mainly volunteers - does is amazing and needs us all to chip in. Only 19% of their funding comes from Government, so the funding from other sources including corporates like The Warehouse is absolutely essential!

No amount is too small! You can donate via my page

or directly on De Paul House website

Right now, De Paul House is looking for good quality furniture - especially beds and mattresses , drawers, and dining tables. If you have any of these to donate, then please do call De Paul House on 09 4805959.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
