Sistema Whangarei empowering youth leadership through the joy of music making.
Whangarei, Northland
On April 16th 2013 Sistema Whangarei - Toi Akorangi opened the doors to possibility to all children in Whangarei. Learning to play an orchestral instrument is often seen as for the elite and something for the rich and western world. By offering tuition for all regardless of ethnicity, gender or social standing we create a space for equity which breaks down the barriers to a successful life and creates a sense of belonging. Little did we know just how incredible these young people were going to become. Music through mindfulness and the process of ako has empowered a group of brave and might rangatahi musicians. Our young people compose award winning compositions and are praised by professionals. Our young people make impossible requests and walk tall in our community. Our young people set goals and challenge themselves to achieve them. Our Rangatahi are the leaders for the next generation and they are leaders now!
Sistema Whangarei -Toi Akorangi teaches orchestral instruments and musicianship FREE OF CHARGE ,since April 2013, to children and young people in Whangarei who wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to learn.
We need $12000 to pay for flights to a National Hui held in Wellington. In addition we need $5000 to pay for travel and accommodation for 9 young people to attend the APO summer school.
Latest Update..... 24 February 2022
So because of the Red Light Restrictions, the HUI has been cancelled once again. However, the flights have been booked and paid for and we have a credit so we are going to tentatively rebook for an event in April. We still all got together the weekend of the Hui albeit via ZOOM. The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra recorded a special concert just for our event with one of the Wellington Arohanui Strings violinists playing a solo! It was beautiful!.
We will still all get together and play music together but this Red Light Restriction is making this hard to commit to. We will keep you posted on things as they progress. Thank you so much for your donations and support. It is giving our Rangitahi a great event to look forward to and work towards.
Thank you for your generous donation. It is very much appreciated.
