A greening project - tree-planting in Nigeria.

  • Every little bit counts

      27 September 2022

Here is a recent story of how your donations were put to use:

One of the most touching cases I've ever come across, as just yesterday we went to a camp to see some widows for someone close who wanted to assist.

These triplets lost their Mother while she gave birth to them, the Father passed away exactly 40 days after (may their souls rest in peace)

They are being cared for by the maternal aunt, and her daughter, who are also widows.

We did the little we could yesterday, and before the longer term plan, we provided some infant formulas, grains and some relief for the whole family, from the Lovatt Foundation.

May God the Almighty reward and Bless all those involved, and give this family a future beyond their expectations.

  • Touching message from Sr Fiona

      22 November 2021

It has been many weeks since I last sent an update. Despite this your un-ending contributions have not stopped. I want to thank you all fromthe bottom of my heart ❤ and share the last message from Sr Fiona who has been out in the fields where the work is happening with tree planting and borehole repairs. Since September we have continued to collect funds amongst other things, to repair 56 boreholes in Jigawa state and 9 in Kano.

Salaam alaykum wa rahmatu Allah wa barakatu sis,

Today I visited some of the Jigawa boreholes that we have repaired. Subhana Allah sis it was touching.

I was the first non-African they had seen. The live subsistence lives. Barely anything from outside the village was in the village. One boy about 12 years old screamed and ran away when someone suggested he shake hands with me.

I love these kids taking a ride on the standard cart. Those rubber tyres are from outside the village

They prayed so copiously and freely and one man came out and forced a measure of beans into our hands. Tafarki, the field worker, deserves them. I got a good idea of the work he does for the love of Allah and the people: he borrows a motorbike to go out into the hinterland, some places on tracks and trails where cars have never been.

We came across an ancient tree where ancient men sat in the dark, cool shade. Such a tree could be a classroom or a masjid. The air was sweet beneath it. I believe is was something like a moreton bay fig with the aerial roots growing down.

Without the boreholes there are only muddy ponds remaining after the short rainy season.

The cattle are fat because they have been fed the lost foliage of the tall cereals that have died before they ripened. Around the boreholes there is life! Most villages have bananas now thriving in the spilled water.

Sis, they even love our stickers so much that they have picked them off, leaving only the cleanish rectangle  where it was.

    Subhana Allah,

These last two photos show a Borehole that Sr. xxx Ali has paid for.

This one has not functioned for four years. The settlement of about 250 households (pop. c. 1500) has not had any visitors other than relatives in all that time. Their subsistence farming is exactly that.

For all these years they have been sending donkeys with Jerry cans and clay pots across 10km of savannah to collect water which settles overnight so the sediment is removed.

What relief has come to them today! And such prayers for the people who make loans to Allah SWT in this way.

Their lives have changed. They won't be making this journey several times a day any more.

They won't be hauling the water, hand over hand, out of the depths of the earth.

For those of us who never had to put in this kind of effort for water, we don't understand what it means, to take the long walk of faith, obedience, worship, good deeds. We expect our religion to be as easy as turning on a tap.

In the photos you see people of pure faith. Their prayers have been answered and their lives are changed.

    Alhumdulillah! Jazak Allah Khairan ❤.

Some weeks are like this, thanks to your generosity, the gifts of time added by our volunteers in the field, and the impulse to do good that we share as hands around the world :

    * 71 more trees planted, protected and loved with the Clean Green Team!

    * 6 Boreholes repaired

    * 98 cooked meals served with an orange

And the usual literacy programmes ticking away at Alhudahuda Library and Literacy Centre and through our new programme: Top Up a Teacher so that a dedicated and competent teacher can receive a living wage for their services in education.

Jazak Allah khairan ❤ to each one of you who has supported us with donations since May 2020. Over the months we have used your funds to benefit a huge number of children, families who rely on boreholes as thier source of water. By repairing boreholes we made life so much easier for these people who no longer had to travel vast distances to carry heavy loads of water back home.

We also started supporting the planting of trees for shade and fruits Alhumdulillah a greening project and all through Fiona and Lovatt Foundation.Org. I have now closed this page but have started another one which will continue to support Lovatt Foundations with many other projects including borehole repairs, educational resources, food, planting trees and medical help. Please feel free to visit this page and support with your donations. Please share with family and friends.

Salaam alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatahu. Jazak Allah khairan for all your wonderful support. As our attention turned towards the atrocities against innocent Palestinians in May we did not continue with the borehole repair fundraiser so that people could contribute to assist the Palestinian people.

We have many boreholes left to sponsor if you still interested. Here is the list.

Or if you would like to contribute towards planting fruit trees $15 per tree with protection.

Anyone can join in with Borehole repairs. Those fasting during this lunar month may like to spend particularly at this time so that a parched community in Borno has access to the aquifers beneath their feet.

Cool, fresh water gushing from the dry sand in temperatures of 40°C+!

Such a gift you can give.

Scroll down to see the list of 41 for May.

  • $15 per tree

      8 April 2021
    Main image

Last month we send $170 towards the greening project. Alhumdulillah  strong NZ currency meant a total of 15 trees were planted. Visit to see the progress:

    https://www.facebook.com/428712887278790/posts/2039117502904979/

$15 NZD will go a long way in Nigeria.

    The financial contributions pay for

    * The trees

    * The cages to protect the trees

    * The transport

And then volunteers plant the trees.

Here was the message from Sr Fiona

    "Salaam alaykum sis,

A beautiful avenue of mangoes has been planted by a community in need of the shade and fruit, dust reduction, soil conservation and the free AC and joys of a  tree, Masha Allah.

This is a beautiful project. Sadaqul jariya"

  • Greening of Borno - additional project

      6 March 2021
    Main image

Salaam to all our wonderful donors and supporters. Alhumdulillah we have continued to make tremendous progress in helping people get access to clean water through repairs to boreholes. These repairs have been done by locals so money has stayed within the community.

Sr Fiona has alerted me to another project which she has been part of for 3 years.

    Here is her message below:

HOW MANY TREES WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE PLANTED IN YOUR NAME.

Please put "greening" in comments so we can allocate these funds to planting of more trees.

    Dear Sis

Rahma Monguno and I have been working on the greening of Borno for the past three years. He currently has 10,000 trees making good progress in a nursery.

Do you think people would like to pay for a tree, and it's protection from goats,to be planted as a sadaqa up jariya during the coming months.

This is a project where loose change makes a lot of difference.

Regarding the trees... $15 would pay

    * the nursery for a tree,

    * the people who build the protectors for the trees,

    * the transport to the locations where the people have agreed to water and care for the tree.

All the money strengthens local green enterprise with dignity, AND we get trees in the sandy soil of Borno.

Once again I am putting a call out for donations to our give-a-little page.

Just last week sister Fiona Lovatt messaged to ask funds to be sent earlier than the usual 20th of month due to unrest and pending another lockdown.

Alhumdulillah I was able to send through a sum of $834.50 which you had all kindly donated.

Her response was pleasing and the funds were immediately put to use.

    "Salaam alaykum sis,

Alhamdulilah work is about to begin on 13 boreholes with the money you have sent."

    "Salaam alaykum sis,

The need for water is so pressing that our team have worked into the night to complete as much as they can as quickly as they can. Their hearts are really with the people.

    Four down.

    Nine to go.

    Insha Allah"

  • Repair boreholes in memory of Christchurch victims

      24 August 2020
    Main image

Our goal for the coming month is to raise enough money to repair 51 boreholes as a balm to those who mourn and seek justice for the slain in the Christchurch massacre. The people of Borno know grief on this scale. The boreholes are a symbol of hands across the world, and provide much needed water for communities under stress.

  • The prayers of the poor are a wonderful gift

      16 August 2020

We continue to require your help to support these orphans and many other children from this community with your generous donations. In July another 28 boreholes were repaired with your help. There is very little to send through in August.

The help you give not only provides water but helps families in multitude of ways. It is a gift that improves health and hygiene, enables safe cooking and gardening, building by using the water to mix with other materials and gaining more time in the day when they do not have to trek for many kilometres to access water.

We really seek your assistance in the next 4 days to raise another $500. Please share with friends and family to donate a small amount each to reach our target.

Easy access to clean water is a something we expect without a second thought.

In Borno children carry heavy loads a long way to homes especially when many boreholes are damaged.

Your generous donations❤ are making life a little bit easier for many. Please continue to share this page with family and friends.

  • The water is flowing and so are the smiles

Your donations have given us confidence and resources to continue the repairs of many damaged borehole pumps.

Apart from the obvious benefits of having a functional water supply for many households, there is the advantage that 500 or more people won't need to be taking their daily water supply from the single-use plastic sachets that litter the ground all around. Reduction in litter is added to the list.
