Let's make one last push to support the Cancer Society for Daffodil Day August 2024.
Christchurch, Canterbury
Before she passed away last year, members of our class of 1992 at Marian College were reunited through Kelly and her ability to pull people together. We remember Kelly as a leader, a fine sportswoman, academic and a wonderful friend.
Throughout her journey with cancer, Kelly kept everyone involved, sharing her ups and downs and cracking us up with her unique and relatable humour. We felt we were there with her and were amazed by her positivity.
Our class wants to contribute a lasting memory of Kelly and her legacy of friendship, selflessness, and resilience to Marian College. Just like Kelly would do with friends, we want to create a place of wairua where people might chat, laugh, share their thoughts, or sunbathe.
We plan to install a garden seat at the new Marian College site, set amongst a reflective garden. A small plaque inscribed with an inspirational “Kelly” quote will be affixed to the seat.
We aim to raise $1500 towards the seat construction, installation and garden plants. Kelly’s 50th birthday, 1 September 2024, is our target date to reveal the seat. Any surplus funds will be donated to the Canterbury Cancer Centre.
We hope that students, staff, and friends of Marian will be inspired by what the garden seat represents: Kelly’s infectious humour, positive energy and outlook, being kind and going the extra mile to help others.
This group is the classmates of 1992 who went to school with Kelly Hutton.

Kia ora Koutou and a huge thank you to everyone again for their contributions towards the memorial garden seat for Kelly.
We are finalizing the position of the seat and a way to secure it. Marian college as you know is planting and landscaping it's grounds. At the old Marian college site there was a beautiful Pin Oak tree. A new Pin Oak tree is to be planted on the same day as the seat reveal as part of the ceremony. We are inviting three current students who are the daughters of our class- Malia, Hannah and Briar to be part of the tree planting and reveal of the seat to carry on the legacy of friendship that we all value from our Marian years.
We will make a donation to the Cancer Society of Canterbury later this month once the final costs have been settled, we anticipate the donation to be about $280.
We have set a date for the unveiling for Monday 7 October at 5pm at Marian College.
