I am fundraising money to help a good friend, and former colleague, and his family who are stuck in war-torn Sudan.
International
On April 15th 2023 violent clashes erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan, resulting in the displacement of nearly 8 million people. The SAF favour aerial bombings with little accuracy, resulting in strikes on residential neighborhoods and the loss of civilian lives. The RSF have become well known for their violence, random detentions, looting, random killings and sexual violence. Literally millions of Sudanese have fled their homes in the hope of finding safety and a future for themselves and their families.
A good friend and former colleague, Abumedian Hamoda, would like to take his family to safety.
I am fundraising to help him.
Abumedian and his wife have 4 children ranging in age from 12-22. Since fighting reached their town in December there has been no school or university, no access to healthcare and recently no electricity. Shops have been looted and markets have closed. Caught between street battles and aerial bombardments, with the constant threat of looting and violence by the RSF not to mention soaring prices for food and accommodation life became incredibly difficult. Communication with Abumedian has been worryingly sporadic as the internet across Sudan is often cut for weeks at a time. Abumedian has said that these are the worst days of his life. His concern is for his children's futures and he wants to find peace and stability for them.
Thank you, your contribution is greatly appreciated.
I worked with Abumedian from 2013 - 2016 at Unity High School. He was one of our school's drivers, and he became a good friend.
Costs mount quickly, especially in a war economy. Passports per person $250US, transport to a safer part of Sudan per person $150US, accommodation & food for 6 for min. 2 months $3000US +, visa costs depend on the country.
1 week to go: What's next? 26 June 2024
Thank you so much for donating to help Abumedian and his family find safety.
They all have passports now thanks to the donations, however leaving has proved more challenging than Abumedian expected.
Yesterday the RSF launched a fresh attack on the area and villages surrounding Sennar where Abumedian is currently, and there was shelling inside Sennar city. The city remains under the control of the Sudanese Armed Forces but the RSF hold territory now outside the city.

With less than a week left 'til the page closes, if you're able to donate again please consider it. It's a very challenging time for him and his family right now.
After hearing many reports of a lack of food and healthcare plus safety concerns (looting and robbery) at the camps in Ethiopia he'd planned to take his family too Abumedian decided against that option.
Unfortunately Egypt has made it increasingly difficult/impossible for Sudanese to obtain visas and the authorities, with funding from the EU, have started rounding up and sending back to Sudan any Sudanese immigrants they find.
Abu's chatted with a mutual former colleague who was recently smuggled into Egypt.
He is looking at Libya as an option, but a quick Google will show you that Sudanese refugees everywhere are struggling with a lack of access to safety, food and Healthcare wherever they've gone. And the situation in Sudan continues to decline making staying even less of a viable option.
