Support these groundbreaking young women to represent Aotearoa in this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Nationwide

Nga Puna O Waiorea have emerged as the 2018 Word - The Front Line Champions! the largest Youth Poetry Slam in Aotearoa, drawing around 220 young poets from 44 high School slam teams within the Auckland Region.

Now, they are heading to Melbourne to compete in the 2018 Trans-Tasman Youth Poetry Slam.

This trip is an actual once in a lifetime opportunity for these poets to represent their school and country while connecting with other young people through the art of Spoken Word.

With your help we can make it happen.

In addition to the competition, the team have also been asked to participate in 2018 Upside Down Youth Poetry Conference which will take place at the Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens on Dec. 6th, 2018. The event will connect young leaders from all over Victoria for a solid day of workshops, panels and performances on both poetry and eco sustainability.

They have also been invited to perform at the prestigious Melbourne Spoken Word Prize, one of the largest annual spoken word events in the Southern Hemisphere.

The connections and skills that the team will gain from this experience are invaluable. It will not only help them to grow as artists and leaders, but to also bring the knowledge back home in order to inspire the next generation.

About us

For more than 40 years our programmes have engaged, nurtured, and inspired rangatahi. They have given rangatahi space to reflect, connect and grow. We use Spoken Word Poetry as our vehicle of engagement because of its power in its accessibility and directness - and - it belongs to anyone and everyone who is willing to tell their story. Through story telling we’ve found that it breaks down stereotypes, builds community connection and resilience within individuals and groups.

Use of funds

The funds we are seeking through this campaign will help to cover costs for the trip including flights, food, accommodation and transport for the poets and their support team.
