"Sending our son to Youth Camp on his own was the best thing that, as parents, we could have done for him"
Nationwide
Youth Camps provide an educational and fun weekend camp for boys with haemophilia and other bleeding disorders aged 10-18 years. Held every other year, these camps give the boys opportunities to interact and forged further friendships with others who same the concerns and challenges of living with a bleeding disorder. Team leaders are older youth or men with haemophilia who provide important mentorship.
Boys who attend Youth Camps often return home with an increased sense of self-confidence, a new-found sense of community, and, for many, the ability to self-infuse their own treatment. They also have the chance to make new friends and participate in a number of fun activities that entertain, amuse and challenge in a supportive environment.
“Sending our son to Youth Camp on his own was the best that as parents we could have done for him… The benefits of him attending were huge; he went from leaving here a boy to coming back a young man. He went from hating his haemophilia to embracing it. The education sessions were invaluable to helping him develop a better understanding of it all.”
Because bleeding disorders are lifelong conditions for which there are no cure, HFNZ provides educational workshops for all ages and stages of life.
Haemophilia and other inheritable bleeding disorders such as von Willebrand's Disorder are rare lifelong chronic medical conditions.
Through our Outreach Workers, innovative educational initiatives and camps, physical activity and supportive footwear programmes, HFNZ is able to assist people with these rare disorders through all stages of their life.
