Youth Week

The themes for Youth Week 2011 have been decided, eSTEP UP, Be heard, Take responsibility, Be YOUth'. Why 'STEP UP'? Not only does it portray the idea of rising to the challenge it also insinuated the idea of being able to continuously take another step, moving forward and upward. 'STEP UP, Be heard' is not just about young people having a voice and using it, it's about giving young people the space and the opportunities to voice their opinions. But letting young people express themselves is only half of the equation, listening to them, letting them 'be heard' is the other half. 'STEP UP, Take responsibility' is about young people making informed decisions, realising that decisions have consequences, being good role models, breaking negative stereotypes and taking opportunities to lead. For the wider community it's about being good role models for young people, making good choices that young people can emulate. STEP UP, Be Youth' is all about being yourself, taking care of yourself, doing things that make you happy, expressing yourself, experimenting, making mistakes, challenging yourself and everything else it means to be a young person. Adults need to remember all the great things that young people do and embrace them, as well as challenging themselves to be a little more youthful.
