Field Report: Week 1, Cycling Through Georgia 28 August 2022
The first week of the cycle tour was very interesting. The Georgians are proud people and there is a lot of history here. It is an abundant food growing and wine making area. They have been making wine the traditional way for 8000 years, fermented in 1000 litre qvaris earthen vessels, stored under the ground while the wine ferments.
There are a huge number of old monasteries and fortresses, showing how they have had to deal with invasions for centuries.
The Caucasus mountains run the length of the country, causing a physical barrier from Russia. Having been invaded as recently as 2008 by Russia, the people of Georgia still feel vulnerable from Russian invasion, and must feel the closeness of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which is only the other side of the Black Sea.
My ride is in support of the Ukraine people and I hope to raise a good amount of money to help them in their difficult situation.
Your donations will help Ukrainians with their basic needs, of food, medicine and shelter.
