DEPRESSION DOESN’T DISCRIMINATE… DO YOU?

For those who may not be aware, I suffer from, at times severe, Depression. Like any other illness, depression can strike anyone at any time. Until now I have chosen not to talk about my illness, for many reasons. However, there is a stigma around depression I would love to be able to break. One of the hardest battles I have faced during my depression is the genuine lack of understanding about the illness itself and the feelings that those suffering from depression face.

Though innocent in intentions, through this misunderstanding I have been told that depression does not exist. I have been told to suck it up and I’ve been told to be happy or I will lose everything. I have offended by, and been made to feel guilty for, not wanting to talk and I have been so exhausted by acting happy to keep others happy that it made the dark days seem so much darker.

I share my story not to cause upset, nor to ask for sympathy, but to ask others for their empathy towards those suffering from depression. If they want to talk, listen, with open ears and an open mind. If they don’t want to talk, please accept that. If they don’t want to be alone, just stay with them. If they need space, give it. Be patient, be kind but most importantly, just be there. And above all else, please understand that, like any illness, what they suffer from is real, it hurts and they need your support.

On the 29th of November I am completing the Marlborough Women’s Triathlon to raise money for the awareness of depression. All money raised will go to the Mental Health Foundation.

Thank you for your time and thank you in advance for your donations. I have set no targets as I have no expectations towards the donations of money, all are gratefully accepted. I understand a monetary donation just isn't something that everyone can do, so if this is the case, please, offer to donate your time, understanding and empathy to someone suffering from depression; they need it more than you realise.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
