I am involved as this is a novel and unique way of addressing a real medical and social need in New Zealand. Melanona kills one person every day in New Zealand and the diagnosis is unfunded by Govt and organisations like Melanoma NZ are doing their part to raise the awareness and get people the right access and knowledge they need to avoid this deadly cancer.
Statistics
Over 4000 people are diagnosed with either melanoma in situ or invasive melanoma every year in New Zealand – that’s around 11 every day. It accounts for nearly 80% of all skin cancer deaths. Over 300 New Zealanders die of melanoma every year.
New Zealand has the highest melanoma incidence rate in the world. 70% of melanoma cases occur in people aged 50 years and older. Melanoma rarely occurs in children. Although Maori and Pacific people have a lower chance of getting melanoma, they often have thicker, more serious melanomas. Death rates are higher among men and appear to be increasing.
Melanoma New Zealand (previously called the Melanoma Foundation of New Zealand) is a charitable organisation that aims to prevent avoidable deaths from melanoma and support for New Zealanders affected. You can find us on the Charities Register, www.register.charities.govt.nz, and our charity number is. CC30658.
