I'm a volunteer with Coastguard and have a great story to share. Life throws some curve balls. Here's my life changing story.
Auckland
On 5 April '16, I received a diagnosis of stage 3 colon cancer. While recovering from surgery and with a new outlook on life, I knew I wanted to help others. My passion for boating led me to volunteering for Coastguard. It was a natural fit. I'm now a trained radio operator and I'm keen to do more. At the same time I began walking in the Waitakerie ranges to regain my fitness. I'm now walking the GR5, 700 kms across the French alps, from Lake Geneva to Menton, climbing over 40,000m, 5 times Mt Everest!
My wish is to raise as much as possible for Coastguard as the charity saving lives at sea. This will help fund essential search and rescue equipment and provide us volunteers with training to help us continue being there for kiwis when they need it the most out on the water. Even $1 makes a difference to the nearly 7000 kiwis bought home to safety each year by Coastguard Volunteers. Thank you!
Ran out of land! 23 August 2017
With 705km walked we climbed over 36500m and descended 36900m to the Mediterranean at Menton. With 6 days remaining we diverted off the GR5 onto the GR52, which made the walk longer but the scenery was spectacular.
From where I was back in April last year I feel very lucky to have accomplished this walk, but I couldn't do it alone. Love to my wife and family, friends and others.
