Sober October - Raising funds for Cathys Dance, Taranaki Retreat for Suicide Prevention
Taranaki
Cathy’s Dance for Hope is a gathering of people putting their own inhibitions aside, and dancing in the dark, in the name of suicide prevention. We are raising funds for a new purpose built facility at the Taranaki Retreat. This Taranaki community sanctuary provides time-out for families and individuals, free of charge, when times are really tough.
Early this year, after a short but severe battle with anxiety & depression, our community lost a truly beautiful person to suicide. Her name was Cathy Lee Stewart. She was a wife, daughter, mother, sister, aunty, and friend to so many, but she was taken away suddenly by the cruel illness of depression.
As a communuity, we need to take action. Think about it - there are very very few of us who haven't been touched by suicide in some way. Many of us have bourne the ultimate grief of losing someone close to us. We want things to be different.
The Taranaki Retreat offers people in crisis, a sanctuary where they can heal and find strength, free of charge. There is no government funding for their work - they are entirely funded by the community, for the community. Since they opened in 2017, over 2000 people have reached out for support from them. They need our help to make all this possible
The Taranaki Retreat is hoping to build 'Cathy's Care Centre', which will be an architecturally designed space that will offer sound-proof counselling rooms, a family therapy room, and additional accommodation, as the retreat is constantly at capacity.
