We support all Cantabrians living with diabetes to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.
Canterbury
We all deserve to live a healthy and fulfilling life, regardless of our circumstances.
In Canterbury, we have one of the highest rates of Type 1 diabetes, in the southern hemisphere, making us unique to the rest of the country.
Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease, but diabetes in any form damages the body’s organs and often leads to major complications like heart failure, blindness, nerve damage, amputation, kidney failure, stroke, and mental health problems.
Unfortunately, successive governments haven’t done enough to make sure those living with this condition receive the care they need to stay healthy and prevent further issues. We are well behind our counterparts in Australia and the UK who receive funded life-saving technology (CGMs) to monitor their blood sugar and have funded awareness programmes in schools and the community.
Spreading awareness of diabetes and its effects is vital because 1 in 10 New Zealanders will have some form of diabetes in the next 20 years. Knowing how to decrease your chances of developing Type 2 diabetes and knowing the signs and symptoms of both Type 1 and 2 diabetes can save lives. The more New Zealanders who understand diabetes, the more people-power we’ll have to make the government listen to us and fund Continuous Glucose Monitors now!
We’re on a mission to give away 1000 mascot bees and information flyers to raise awareness of diabetes in Canterbury. Donate now to help us raise funds to run our awareness campaign.
