Participating in The 12ks of Christmas for Project Island Song - 2025
Russell, Northland
From 1st to 12th December, I will walk 12km per day, for 12 days straight - that's 144km - to complete the 12ks of Christmas challenge for Project Island Song.
After all, I paint the birds - and some of them wouldn't flourish without Island Song's fantastic work.
The epic 144km total has a nice resonance as there are 144 islands in the Bay of Islands, seven of which are pest-free thanks to Project Island Song!
Please consider a donation, however small, to spur us all on! $1, or $1 per day, or $1 per kilometre - it all adds up.

Project Island Song is a pest-free wildlife sanctuary covering seven islands in the eastern Bay of Islands. The community conservation partnership works to restore and protect the natural eco-systems and heritage of the Bay of Islands so that it is here for everyone, forever.
Since 2009, the project has eliminated pests from the islands, reintroduced 8 vulnerable native species, planted over 43,000 native trees, and engaged thousands of tamariki with our unique natural environment.
By sponsoring me to take part in the 12ks of Christmas, you’re helping to continue the restoration of these islands through supporting vital work including pest surveillance and control, volunteer weedbusting trips, reintroducing species, and more.
They did it! 15 December 2025
Huge congratulations and thanks to the 20 absolute heroes who completed their 12ks of Christmas challenges on Friday!
It's been an immense effort from all of them, covering huge distance in the unseasonably hot early December weather.
Alongside their physical efforts, they have all done an incredible job of engaging with their community and networks, raising more than $21,600 towards the restoration of the islands. This is a huge contribution, breezing past the $15,000 raised last year, and the fundraising page will still be open for donations until 31st December.
Massive thanks are also due to everyone who has donated to support our participants. What an awesome way to end the year!
Check out this little video we've put together to celebrate their efforts. Meri Kirihimete!
Support our awesome fundraisers walking and running the 12ks of Christmas to raise money for Project Island Song!
They feel over-used rather than stylish right now, but thanks!
