Fundraising for Otago Community Hospice
Dunedin, Otago
My motivation to support the Hospice is because my whanau and very close friends have been supported and cared for by the Hospice in what I'd describe as the hardest times of our lives. The Hospice is incredibly generous with its service, time, support, and care, not only to our loved ones but to the entire family. I recall when my father-in-law was in care in 2008; for Maori whanau, this means everyone, including extended whānau and friends. We played the guitar and sang, and even had a beer with Dad. We could stay with him and be by his side 24/7. His time, his fight, and his care are among the many cherished memories I hold dear to my heart and mind.
In March 2024, I read a post on Facebook where the Hospice in Dunedin was looking for volunteers. I hadn't done any voluntary work since 2018, because of the support my whanau, extended whanau, and friends had, I applied. I have been working every Saturday since April 2024, I have in that time made new friends, and I love giving my time to this organisation, which relies on the charity and generosity of others for funding. Without the donations, and the wonderful doctors and nurses, and support team, who would help us care for our loved ones in their final weeks and days with us, either at the Hospice or at home. PWP5, is another way to contribute. I'm 52, never fought in an event like this before, but I'm giving everything I've got physically, mentally, and emotionally, to raise money for this charity. Please support me.
Update post fight night October 4th 2025 7 November 2025
Hi everyone
Here is my final update for the givealittle page.
I tore my calf muscle 9 days before the event which left me unable to train for the most part, only having 2 x 1 hour training sessions the Thursday and Friday before the big night. Needless to say, the 8 weeks of training before that left me in good steed for what was to come on fight night
My opponent came out very aggressive, and reflecting on her fight more than mine, I think her plan may have been to go hard at me and knock me out. However, my fight plan was to take all that she threw at me, and then throw my own combos when I had the opportunity to. It was not the fight plan I had in my head to start with, but I had to adjust and reexamine what I was going to do in a matter of seconds.
I had so much love and support in the crowd and at home watching on the night. I'm happy to tell you all that I won my fight, a majority decision by the judges. At 52, I'm very proud of my effort, resilience, strength in completing this event.
Thanks to those who donated to my charity ❤️
