In memory of Bernand and in support of expectant parents experiencing premature loss.
Auckland
Later this year, I'll finally be getting round to attempting my second ever marathon. This time I'll be taking in the pleasant surrounds of the Southern Alps in the Queenstown Marathon. And this time, I'll be attempting to complete it without the aid of energy drinks, gels or chews en route. And maybe grab a new PB on the way.
As it's been a while since the last one, it seems reasonable to attempt to raise money for a good cause in the process. This year I will be supporting Sands – the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society.
As some of you may be aware, my sister Katie was due to give birth this month. Unfortunately Bernard encountered a fatal fetal abnormality which would have given him no chance outside of the womb. The painful decision was made by Katie and Troy to terminate the pregnancy at 24 weeks gestation. While Bernard didn't manage to arrive ready for our world, he is still sadly missed by friends and family touched by his tragic plight.
Sands consists of a network of parent-run, non-profit groups supporting families who have experienced personal struggles similar to what my sister and brother-in-law have gone through. It is run with the help of an amazing team of voluntaeers – most of whom are bereaved parents themselves. They offer this support free fo charge, both directly as “befrienders” to those affected by the death of a baby and as training to healthcare professionals to assist in the care they can give to the wider community.
By donating to Sands NZ you will help us support parents, train professionals and save babies' lives today and in the future. And in the process, you'll give me the extra push needed to get me over the finish line in Queenstown!
So please, give what you can and make a difference. In the meantime, I'll try and post training updates to let you know how I'm getting on. I can't wait for November to arrive as I'm sure this race will be something very special indeed. Thank you!
My nephew, Bernard, passed away while being carried by my sister earlier this year. I want to raise money to help others that may find themselves in that same tragic situation.
