Shaving my head to raise awareness for Mental Health issues.
Otago
My hair has always been my identifier, people have always commented on it and I have put a lot of time, effort (and money) into making it look as good as possible. Shaving my head is for me a way of showing my friends and family how far I am prepared to go for this cause. I have thought about doing it for years (the idea first came to me whilst surfing in Cornwall in 2010.) The idea of completely removing my main feature and being a more raw, exposed version of myself was always appealing, as well as, a little terrifying. Shedding my hair is a symbol of shedding ones skin and putting myself out there, something I know first hand that those with mental health may struggle to do. I hope through my actions I can inspire or help those who need it in some small way.
Mental health has always been an issue I have felt a connection to and I have seen how it can affect anyone at any time. Here in New Zealand we are constantly told things about how good we have it and how we 'live in paradise' however mental health issues can and do still exist and we do not talk about them enough due to shame or guilt or a lack of connection. It is a complicated issue that I feel needs more attention and research and would therefore like to focus my attention on raising awareness and support for this cause.
