Help preserve Okains Bay Museum’s nationally significant collection of Taonga Māori and Pākehā settler history, now and into the future.

Okains Bay, Canterbury

Our heritage and histories are more important than ever. With its nationally significant collections, rural character, and intimate setting, Okains Bay Museum on Banks Peninsula is uniquely placed to contribute to local and national conversations about our past.

Since Murray Thacker established the museum in 1977 and gifted it to the people of Aotearoa/New Zealand, Okains Bay Museum has grown to become a significant cultural and educational attraction, drawing visitors from all over New Zealand and the world. In 2016, Te Papa experts classified the Museum’s Taonga Maori to be “a collection of national significance”.

In his lifetime, Murray volunteered his expertise and time and reached into his own pocket in times of need to assist the Museum. This generosity kept the Museum afloat. Since Murray’s death, it has become increasingly difficult to secure grants. Maintenance projects have been put on hold while the care and accessibility of the collections take priority.

Now, we are seeking your help to undertake an urgent maintenance project. Repairing rusted spouting and damaged drains may not sound very exciting. However, this project will contribute enormously to protecting these collections of national and regional significance so they remain accessible to all New Zealanders, now and into the future.

In the spirit of founder Murray Thacker QSM at this time of need, we ask you to reach into your pocket for a donation to support this project.

Thank you for helping us reach our fundraising goal  11 May 2023

With a few more hits of the refresh button, our target has been reached, but still with a day to go!

All donations we receive until the end of the campaign at midnight on Friday will go towards fixing the spouting and drainage issues that plague the Museum and protecting the taonga in our care.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! We are humbled and heartened that so many of you care for our heritage as much as we do! Your generosity has kept alive the legacy begun by our late founder, Murray Thacker so many years ago.
