Support new mums and their families in Nelson

We believe that all mum’s and their families experiencing perinatal distress should be provided with FREE counselling.

Perinatal Support Nelson has been supporting our region for the past 34 years. It was originally started by a group of women who were experiencing postnatal depression (pnd) who recognised that there was NO support available to them in the community.

Our work centres around the first 1000 days of a child’s life, from conception through to two years of age.

Often families with young children are under financial strain as one parent leaves the workforce and they can’t afford to pay for counselling to help the mum’s mental wellbeing. Our government is not doing enough for maternal mental health and that’s where we come in.

By providing support to a woman suffering from Perinatal Distress, we are helping her, and helping build the bond between her and her baby which in the long run gives that child a better chance in life.

Our team is a combination of volunteers and a few paid staff and finding the funds to continue supporting mums in our community is always a challenge.

There are only about 6 organisations in the whole of Aotearoa/ New Zealand providing this specialised work at a grassroots level and Perinatal Support Nelson is vital for this region.
