2 inexperienced swimmers + 3km of ocean = 1 ambulance fund to transport women requiring critical care to our Maternity clinic in the Congo!
Auckland
The clinic in Rusayo serves a population of over 150,000 people whom, until earlier this year (2015), had no access to medical or maternity care. The clinic is now up and running and is already saving lives but it is difficult for many people in this vast population to access the care because of the lack of decent roads and means of transport. Often very sick people, and labouring women (often encountering problems during childbirth before they choose to access the clinic) have to walk very long distances, be carried by friends and family or travel on the back of a motorbike for many kilometres. A robust ambulance will help us to provide transport to people in these desperate situations and would enable us to transfer emergency cases from the Rusayo clinic to specialist services in Goma. Comfort Rwanda and Congo New Zealand is raising funds to buy a four wheel drive ambulance that is able to drive over the volcanic rock ‘roads’.
We are involved because our Midwifery belief is that ALL women, despite location, financial circumstances, and race deserve the best care when bringing life into this world.
