Our current project is to purchase and fund a life saving ambulance for the new maternity and general clinic in Rusayo, rural DR Congo.
Comfort Rwanda and Congo New Zealand works with Comfort Rwanda and Congo, a UK based charity which partners with local Christian organisations in Rwanda and DRC, helping them to support those most in need. The aim is to bring them from a position of requiring care and relief to a point of wholeness and sustainability.
As a relatively new charity, Comfort Rwanda and Congo New Zealand will start by focusing on one specific project at a time; currently an ambulance for the maternity and general clinic in Rusayo, a rural area of Goma in Eastern DRC.
The clinic in Rusayo serves a population of over 150,000 people whom, until earlier this year (2015), had no access to medical or maternity care. The clinic is now up and running and is already saving lives but it is difficult for many people in this vast population to access the care because of the lack of decent roads and means of transport. Often very sick people, and labouring women (often encountering problems during childbirth before they choose to access the clinic) have to walk very long distances, be carried by friends and family or travel on the back of a motorbike for many kilometres. A robust ambulance will help us to provide transport to people in these desperate situations and would enable us to transfer emergency cases from the Rusayo clinic to specialist services in Goma.
Comfort Rwanda and Congo New Zealand is raising funds to buy a four wheel drive ambulance that is able to drive over the volcanic rock ‘roads’.
