Help get Tamati, a blind athlete (and Ben his guide) to the New York marathon 2015.
Auckland
Imagine a world where the tasks that most people take for granted every day become a mountain to climb for those who have both visible and non-visible disabilities. Many of these people are unable to part in mainstream activities. Achilles New Zealand helps to break down these barriers in New Zealand and have disabled athletes fulfil their dreams and take part in mainstream running activities. Achilles New Zealand is sends a team of disabled athletes to New York every year to compete alongside able bodied athletes in the NY marathon. In order to send the team they need to raise sufficient funds to cover the costs. With travel, accommodation, race entries and all the hidden expenses it is not a cheap venture. This year is no different and there is a team going to New York for the marathon – help them get there!!
Tamati is a blind athlete who has recently started running with Ben as his guide. This year they will be both be running their first marathon with New York at the end of the year. Tamati relies on Ben to help him run and act as his ‘eyes’ while out. Ben was inspired to volunteer as a guide after watching his father in law – Brian complete the New York marathon as part of the Achilles New York marathon team in 2013 in his hand crank. He realised that nothing really is impossible with determination.
112 days to go.... 12 July 2015
Tamati has been busy training (Ben for weekends and Andrew for events). Ben was reminded Tamati recently that late last year he would struggle to run more than 3 kms, now he's quite comfortable running 10km. On weekend training runs, the route involves going around the North Shore (Glenfield and surrounds) and involves quite a few hills - Ben likes pushing Tamati up hills!
Recently Tamati undertook the 10km at the Wellington marathon and set his Personal Best thanks to the guiding efforts of Andrew and Elliott. The next challenge is the Taupo half marathon (1st August), following this the half for Achilles Coach/Manager Kiri Price at the Lydiad Marathon in West Auckland on 12th September, before he embarks and takes on New York with his guide Ben.
