Two marathons in two months - to help change the system!

I'm running the Dunedin and Queenstown marathons to help improve our criminal justice system.

Dunedin, Otago

I'm putting in the hard yards to try and do something I've never done before.

Back in September 2019, I ran my first-ever marathon in Dunedin with a time of 5:17:55.

This year, I want to run two marathons within just over two months (Dunedin 14/9, Queenstown 15/11) with the aim of going under 4 hours for each.

I'm doing it for my own health journey (having started the year at 113.8kg), but also to provide some incredible important pūtea for two charities doing important mahi to try and improve our criminal justice system here in Aotearoa. For context:

Tāne Māori - 15% of general population, 52% of prison population.

Wāhine Māori aged 20-60 - 15% of general population, 63% of prison population.

JustSpeak is an independent, people-powered movement committed to the complete transformation of the Aotearoa New Zealand criminal justice system, bringing people together to reimagine a justice system that works for everyone. They advocate with government and other important people at the top tables of policymaking. They are guided by Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Moana House is a well-established residential therapeutic community in Dunedin for tāne with a connection to the criminal justice system wanting to change their lives for the betterment of themselves, their whānau and their communities. Moana House have a bicultural foundation and directly work with these tāne through residential and aftercare services.

Disappointing end   1 November 2025

Hi team,

It has been around five weeks since the Dunedin Marathon. In that time I’ve been battling two separate bouts of sickness (one of which I’m navigating at the moment) and calf injuries that have killed off all prep for the Queenstown marathon.

As such, I’ve made the bitter call to withdraw from the Queenstown marathon.

I’m gutted, but take comfort in all the support you’ve given me throughout the journey.

Thanks once more for your help and kind words and donations - they’ve honestly helped me push through in some tough patches.

This journey ends but the path to a more just justice system continues.
