Walking North Island for diagnostic assessment children/adults with Specific Learning Disabilities e.g. Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia
Nationwide
On Saturday 9 October 2021 in dyslexia awareness week, I started my attempt to walk the North Island of New Zealand on the Te Araroa Trail 1710 kilometers from Cape Reinga to Wellington.
After 836 km and 37 days (roughly Auckland to Whanganui), I had to travel home on 3th February 2022 to take care of my injured husband, since the 1th March I am at home recovering of long Covid and hope to restart my journey in the week of 5 October 2022 dyslexia week.
You are welcome to follow my adventure on Facebook Duke on Te Araroa.
I am a SPELD NZ staff member. Daily we receive phone calls from parents, desperate to help their child. Demand has increased 25% since the Covid 19 lockdowns due to parents home schooling children and realising their child cannot read, is performing well below their reading age level or is showing learning avoidance behaviours. Every dollar donated will go towards an assessment that can positively change the life path of a child/young adult student.
During this adventure I like to raise funds for students (children and adults) from low income families with Specific Learning Disabilities e.g. Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia afford a diagnostic assessment which helps SPELD NZ teachers design a customized one on one tuition programme that will help them learn to read/write and do math.
