Cancer Society is a non-government organisation reliant on community support and donations to reduce the impact and incidence of cancer.

Supporting research into the causes and treatments of cancer; providing care and support including practical assistance, emotional support and information about cancer and its treatment; supporting education of health workers to improve cancer treatment and care; undertaking health promotion focusing on preventing cancer.

Statistics show men are more likely than women to die of cancer, diabetes and heart disease so in 2008 the Cancer Society launched a Men’s Health Challenge, Te Matataki Hauora Tane. The aim is to encourage men to be more proactive about their health. In the first month 300 men visited their health professional who otherwise would not have.
