Cook Strait Challenge - Senior Kidstimers - Lawrence-Waitahuna Presbyterian Church

Swimming Cook Strait in a pool - 880 lengths or 22km. SKT's are challenging themselves and hoping to raise some money for 3 worthy causes.

Otago

Cook Strait Swim - Senior Kidstimers (SKT's) at Lawrence-Waitahuna Church like a challenge. In 2019 they have accepted the challenge to try and swim Cook Strait. No, they will not be swimming the actual 22km in cold, shark infested waters between the North (Te Ika-a-Māui) and South (Te Waipounamu) Islands of New Zealand. But they think 880 lengths of our awesome local 25m "Splash Out" pool will be challenge enough.

They will be swimming in a relay on Tuesday 17th December 2019 beginning at 9am. With four girls swimming that will still be 5.5km or 220 lengths each. They are training hard and getting some help from local swim coaches to prepare.

These girls are not swimming for themselves but to raise funds for 3 charities:

Sewing machines for Nepalese Women - the Lydia Centre runs a training course in Kathmandu that teaches woman from remote Nepalese villages how to earn an income for their families. In a nation where woman are not always treated well this is a great gift. After completing the 5 month course they are given a graduation gift, a peddle sewing machine, to take back to their village and begin their own business. These sewing machines cost $250 each and the girls want to help provide some of these to help provide them with a fresh start.

Goats for students - Tahan Theological College is in Myanmar. Rev Helen and Wayne Harray are currently working at the college. Helen is teaching english and Wayne is transforming the land around the college into a workable farm. Wayne wants to buy some goats in kid that they can milk to provide nourishment, an income and better use the land. A goat in kid in Myanmar costs approx. $250.

Support a nurse - Erica Aarsen is a 26 year old nurse in the Emergency Dept at Dunedin Hospital. She wants to go with an organisation called SIM (Serving in Mission) to work in a medical hospital in South Sudan. South Sudan has had a very difficult time recently and the hospital is close to a Refugee Camp at Doro. Erica is raising money to be able to go over to Doro and work there as a nurse. The SKT's think she is brave and kind to want to give her life to do this. Money they raise will help cover some of Erica's costs.

Any donations and sponsorship Anna, Isla, Paige and Imogen raise will support these three projects.

Thank you!!!!!!!!  28 December 2019

So we gave the Challenge and the girls took it on. Swim 22km. Raise some money for 3 worthy causes that really highlight the need for resilience in this world.

Not only did the girls nail the swim they have to this point raised more than $2000, yes that's right, over $2k. In no small way is that due to your generosity.

Here's Anna's thoughts on the swim:

Thank you so much to everyone who donated some money to our swim challenge. We have raised over $2000 which is way more than I was expecting. On the day I had a lot of fun and really enjoyed it. It made such a difference having all the supporters there. When we got tired it was good to remember why we were doing it. I learnt so much from this challenge like to never give up and always give things a go. Once again thank you so so so much. Anna Harrex

The page will close on Dec 31st.

Once again thank you for helping our young leaders discover just how far they can go and to take up the challenges they face in life with courage.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
