Good Bitches Baking is a network of people who want to show kindness to those in their communities having a tough time. We show our kindness in the form of home baking.

And there are plenty of people out there having tough times: families with children in hospital; those using food banks and soup kitchens; residents in hospice and their loved ones; women and children fleeing domestic violence. We deliver home baking to organisations that have direct access to people like this and are able to make sure it gets to those that really need a treat.

What we’ve come to realise is that it’s actually not the kindness that makes the biggest difference, it’s the sense of home that home baking creates.

Home is something many of us take for granted – the physical security of a roof over our heads, the emotional security of belonging, and the comfort of having somewhere that’s yours. The organisations we deal with are supporting people who, for a range of reasons, are lacking the benefits of home - because they can’t be at home, home isn’t a place of safety, or because they simply don’t have one.

So we cry tears of happiness when we hear that somehow our baking creates the sense of home that our recipients don’t currently have. They say that having baking in their sparse offices encourages people to stay a little longer and open up a little more. They say that baking made them miss their home a bit less when they got back from treatment. They say that they took time, over a piece of cake, to connect with someone. They say that knowing someone cared enough to make them a treat made them feel less alone.

We’ve been running on the smell of an oily rag over the past three years since we started bitching. We've grown from 12 volunteer bakers in September 2014 to well over 1300 across 16 chapters around NZ today. By our calculations, by the end of 2018, we will have delivered 500,000 kind moments of sweetness with kiwis having a tough time.

Our growth has meant we’ve brought the lovely Kearin on board part-time to do the HQ stuff needed to support your hard work.

We've worked incredibly hard over the last few years to keep up with demand and get us to where we are. The truth is, we can't keep going without more support. Running a charity of this size does cost money. Last year, we brought on a paid part-time coordinator to do the HQ stuff needed to support our chapters and volunteers do their amazing work. Our coordinator is already working well above her capacity, and our Board is looking to the future to ensure we're financially sustainable.

But we can't do it without your help. We don't need much - we try very hard to be as lean as possible, and certainly have a fraction of the overheads of similarly sized volunteer organisations.

Here's how your donation will make a difference:

$5 helps us share a moment of sweetness with around 20 people.

$25 keeps one of our smaller chapters in boxes for three months

$100 keeps our larger chapters in boxes for three months

$500 gives us a week of part time administrative support

$1000 is what we'll need each week to run Good Bitches Baking by the end of 2018.

Thanks for your support. Together, we can make New Zealand the kindest place on earth.

While we’re not naïve enough to think that baking can truly save the world; it’s at least a little bit sweeter, for everyone involved.

Nic & Marie
