Supporting Kiwi kids to break free of generational cycles like poverty, abuse or family violence, by creating layers of support around them

Hornby, Christchurch

Many Kiwi children are missing out on the support they need to feel secure and to reach their potential. Many are trapped in generational cycles like poverty, abuse or family violence, and the odds are stacked against them.

But when the problems these kids face can be so complex, what can any of us do?

We have worked as a charity in the Hornby community for more than 30 years, providing not-for-profit counselling, community support and school-based services.

We've worked with many struggling families over the years - but we have often felt like an ambulance at the bottom of a cliff.

Through our Longitudinal Whānau Support project we are working to create real change.

To tackle complex, intergenerational problems, we believe we need a long term, intergenerational solution, creating layers of support around vulnerable children.

The LWS works by:

- Connecting with schools to identify and support isolated and at risk families;

- Committing to building a relationship with those families long term, from when their children are aged 5 to 20, supporting them throughout;

- Creating a school-based Opportunity Hub, connecting wider community groups to provide sports, arts or cultural opportunities available to all children at the school;

- Helping at risk teens to identify their strengths and passions, while supporting them to chase them

Launched two years ago, we have established one school hub in Hornby and currently support 25 at-risk children - but your support will enable us to expand.
