Through ocean experiences and Polynesian voyaging waka, our mission is to increase understanding of and appreciation for Maori culture, traditions, knowledge, and worldview among all New Zealanders.
Our Goals are to
1. Provide innovative, educational programmes to develop confident and resilient youth who are connected to their environment, culture, community, whanau and self-identity.
2. To provide a platform by which all cultures can interact positively and learn elements of kaupapa Maori and experience sailing on a traditional voyaging waka.
3. To participate and contribute as part of a larger waka whanau to the revitalization and promotion of traditional voyaging and navigation in New Zealand and the Pacific.
Our activities are conducted to the highest ethical standards that are underpinned by the values and principles of kaupapa Maori (knowledge & traditions) and Tikanga (protocols & traditions), specifically – Whanaungatanga – belonging and kinship.
Combining teamwork, learning and fun, youth discover learning by way of the ocean.
They gain knowledge, personal growth,empowerment and develop an appreciation of Maori culture & traditions while learning traditional sailing methods of our ancestors.

“Rising” ~the empowerment that arises from knowing who you are.
The Hawaiki Rising Voyaging Trust was established with the vision of connecting young people with Maori and Pacific culture, the natural world and ultimately themselves. In 2014 The trust was privileged to acquire the waka ‘Hinemoana’ as the vessel for strengthening our people and our communities.
We now offer 14 life changing ocean-based Youth Development programmes each year for young people aged 14 to 19 years of age.
Combining teamwork, learning and fun our voyagers will discover learning by way of the ocean. Over 8 days and under the guidance of experienced crew a community is created of shared knowledge, growth and empowerment. Our unique youth development voyages integrate learning into a big adventure.
