Thanks to all the generous support from the crowdfunding (https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/new-home-for-japan-kauri-education-trust) and the grants funding from New Zealand Government and organizations, Japan Kauri Education Trust (JKET) was able to reopen The Japanese Children's Library and Japanese Heritage Centre of Auckland (Japanese language and cultural classes for children) in Rosedale, Auckland in January 2021. So here again, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to everybody who made us possible to settle in our new HOME.

We extended the library open hours (Monday - Saturday, 9 am - 3 pm) to serve the community better. As a result, in 6 months, more than 40 families newly became members in addition to the existing ones from the old location, and the number of checked-out books is recording close to 1000 books every month.

We've started our services like the Community Hub where the community members can meet and mingle by offering the services such as the meeting/gathering time for the families with children around the same age groups, the hours for the families who would like to read books in quiet settings (Quiet Hours), Islamic Story Time to understand Muslim culture, along with restarted Japanese Story Time for babies and toddlers.

As for the Japanese Heritage Centre, after leasing the spaces in community houses to hold the classes for six months since the move, we were able to have our own classrooms in the new premises. All of our students are very excited and happy to have their classrooms back. Moreover, for children who went through numerous lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the classroom is one of their indispensable HOME where they can learn and play with their peers with the same Japanese roots. Moreover, it made us realize again that these spaces are very important for the children's well-being to grow healthy mentally and physically.

Another project we've been tackling is to build the Social Safety Net for the Japanese community. It is common to be dismayed and feel anxiety in life among different cultures. We will continue to work hard to build a safe, comfortable, content multicultural society by establishing good relationships with other NPOs and local organizations and work with the Japanese community to understand the New Zealand social systems.

The Services & Projects started in the new location:

Single Parent's Group, Teen Volunteer Group, Seed & Plant Library, Baby Clothing Library, Women's Wellbeing Workshops, Breast Cancer Pink Ribbon Breakfast, etc.

We are helping the community members to thrive in their lives in New Zealand through aiming Japanese cultural and language perseverance. We truly appreciate the support you had given; however, we need to ask you for donations to keep us serving the community. Just a small amount will help us keep serving here as the Japanese Community Hub.

JKET team would like to thank you in advance for your support!

「Single Parent's Group(シングルママ・パパのためのサポートグループ)」、「Teen Volunteer Group(ティーンのボランティアグループ)」、「Seed & Plant Library(種&植物の交換)」「Baby Clothing Library(赤ちゃんの古着交換)」、「Women’s Wellbeing Framework(移民女性が充実したNZ生活を送るためのワークショップ)」、「Breast Cancer Pink Ribbon Breakfast(乳がん検診の推奨と朝食会)」など。

Thank you for your support in 2021!  22 December 2021

Posted by: Yuko Garnell

Dear JKET supporters,

2021 was the year of a new start for Japan Kauri Education Trust. In January, we resumed our Japanese Children’s Library services, Japanese Heritage Centre of Auckland. Since then, we have hosted various workshops in the new ‘home’; all these wouldn’t have been possible without warm support from so many community members and organisations. I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the continued understanding and support you’ve given to JKET amidst the COVID-19 pandemic despite the difficulty and uncertainty caused by prolonged lockdown and numerous challenges in many aspects of our life.

Our society is still dealing with the ongoing impact of COVID-19 and will be volatile due to public safety regulations. While it is for sure a challenging time for JKET, it is also a critical time for us to repeatedly ponder the meaning of our services to the community and refresh our minds to work towards our goal.

To materialise the multi-cultural society with full potential, we will keep working hard to meet the needs of the Japanese community by offering the opportunities to deepen the understanding of the cultural differences between New Zealand and Japan while establishing great relationships with regional organisations.

Thank you so much for your continuous support and understanding of JKET.

May this holiday season be filled with joy and peace.

Naoko Miyauchi

Director
