National Wetland Trust

National Wetland Trust

We want a New Zealand where all ecosystems are cherished. We have lost 90% of our wetlands, help us save what's left and recreate more.

Nationwide

We are all about getting people ‘into wetlands’ through education, networking, training and information sharing, and through field outings and wetland trails to help people visit and enjoy wetlands.

We want to build a National Wetland Discovery Centre and we're already creating a showcase restored wetland teeming with wildlife to teach, engage and wow people.

We also have input to government and council polices, to ensure wetlands are protected and enhanced.

Since 2000 we've run 8 national wetland restoration symposia, created 3 regional wetland trails, a phone app and web directory of wetlands to visit, held regular World Wetland Day events, restored a unique peatland complex, involved school children in wildlife surveys and planting days, produced a book on our Wet and Wild places, and a guide to running wetland events. We have built the first ever self-guided, interactive, outdoor wetland discovery trail at Rotopiko near Hamilton and put in boardwalks, bat roost boxes, waterfowl breeding ponds and have lots more in the pipeline!

Wetland Discovery Trail  24 November 2016

Our new hands-on wetland discovery trail at Rotopiko/Lake Serpentine near Hamilton is now OPEN. We launched it on 11th Feb to celebrate World Wetlands Day and over 400 people came to try it out.

Activities include Eels and Ladders, Mudfish Scrabble, Mix and match wetland birds and more. The Ohaupo Lions Club helped us with installation, Te Awamutu Menzshed built activity station boxes and many other volunteers put in time building, painting, drawing, and designing. Your donations helped us turn this concept into a reality. THANK YOU. We hope you will visit the site to see how your contributions have helped us educated people in a fun way about our precious wetlands.
